ANTHONY SIMAS: Accessing CommUNITY - with heART

Anthony Simas has been on my radar for some time,

and I was thrilled to bring him into the Fold as a CommUNITY Catchup guest.

Anthony is someone I came to know through my brother – they are friends and for years I have heard so many incredible things about him but we’ve never formally met, despite always crossing paths. Having worked in some capacity around the world of accessibility myself, I was especially inspired by his story and consistently by his endeavours.

Anthony Simas is Toronto born and raised and wears many hats – with roots in athletics and work as an electrician, Anthony’s life changed after enduring a spinal cord injury during a getaway at his family cottage, leaving him a quadriplegic. Anthony has beat incredible odds and doubts from strangers and medical professionals alike making a progressive recovery to become the person he is today. His MO, turning negatives into positives, is fueled by sharing his story with others, where he is able to be a voice for others who live with disabilities, eradicating stigmas that surround their lives to remove the dis and capitalize ABILITY. Anthony has inspired others and helped communities reach their potential through various collaborations and speaking opportunities, including at multiple events with University Health Network, P.A.R.T.Y Program, and local conscious creative collective, Toronto Show Love Co. He is an avid creator, cultivating his YouTube channel with tips for other wheelchair users and short films, as well as multimedia content on Instagram (follow him here) about disability awareness, wheelchair tips, mindfulness, and more.
